"…but David encouraged
himself in the LORD his God" (I Samuel. 30:6b.)
A discouraged man is a man that
has surrendered his dream to his enemy. He is a man who has no more ability to
believe God. It ought not to be so with the children of the Most High God. It
is not easy to kill an eagle. The eagle flies away to safety. Have you ever
seen an eagle killed? You are an eagle Christian, and as an eagle Christian,
you ought to outwit your enemy like a footballer dribbles past his opponents to
score a goal. King David has the formula: ENCOURAGE YOURSELF IN THE LORD. It is
instructive to note that immediately David "encouraged himself in the LORD
his God", the LORD gave him the enablement to look at the problem through
His eyes, and then gave him a supernatural battle plan: "…pursue; for thou
shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all" (I Sam. 30:8b).
Your dream has a voice but there are many voices competing for your attention.
The loudest of these voices is that of discouragement. The voice of
discouragement is at its peak when there is a delay in the manifestation of
your dream.
In Daniel 3:15, king
Nebuchadnezzar began to put pressure on Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-ne-go. The
devil is responsible for Nebuchadnezzar's action. The devil has different
names. It does not matter by what language you call his name. What matters is
that he is the architect of all unrest.
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,
did not budge at Nebuchadnezzar's threat and pressure to bow to a strange god.
Let me remind you that you need to be very wary so that you don't bow to
anything that poses a threat to your loyalty to God. Unrighteousness is a god
of its own. Jealousy and dishonesty are also gods. Do not bow to them. The
three Hebrew men in Dan. 3:17-18 told king Nebuchadnezzar without mincing words
that even if God refused to deliver them, they will not bow to his god. Your
maturity as a Christian becomes real when you can serve God for who He is and
not for what he can do for you. There is no gain saying the fact that God can
do great things for you, but that is not the criterion for you to serve Him. He
is God all the time. Shedrach, Meshach and Abednego made this point clear to
the king that even if God does not deliver them, he cannot intimidate them with
fire.
PRAYER/CONFESSION: O Lord, raise
the voice of my dream above the voice of discouragement! Amen
