“Ought ye
not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David
forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?” (II Chro. 13:1-5)
The name
‘Abijah’ means the will of God while Jeroboam’ means a man who has many people’.
Humanly speaking, Abijah wouldn’t stand a chance in the battle with Jeroboam,
yet he went to the top of the mountain and shouted with authority. See verse 4-5.
It is generally believed that a child who
beats his/her chest to challenge an elder is either swimming in money or is
possessed by witchcraft. But I am going to add something to that adage. Such a
child probably knows something that the elder does not know. In this
case, it was either Abijah was mad or he knew something that his enemy Jeroboam
did not know. He knew his authority. Abijah said to Jeroboam: “Ought
ye not to know…” other words he was asking: “Are you not supposed to
know?” No wonder he climbed the mountain top to speak out with such
boldness and assurance.
In 1 Sam.
2:1, Hannah said “… my mouth is enlarged over my enemies …” When you know what
your enemies do not know, you speak louder and move more confidently than them. In Job
19:25, Job said: “… for I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the
latter day upon the earth.”
Those around
him at that time would have concluded that he had lost his mind because of the
challenges he was facing. in Job 42:2, He said to God: “I know that You can do
everything and that no thought can be withheld from Thee.” No wonder God responded swiftly: “…
But the LORD turned the captivity of Job.” (Job 42:10)
It is true
that you don’t win battles because of what you have( your army), you win battles because of what you know. Don’t ever under estimate the power of
what you know. Abijah was not afraid when his enemies had a double portion
of men of war. He went to battle because he knew what his enemy did not know
and that is he is operating under an everlasting covenant. He got the victory
because of what he knew that his enemy did not know. What you know gives you an
edge over your enemies. Raise your confidence level in God’s covenant and
abilities
