#EaglesDevotional - GOOD FRIDAY – HISTORY OF EASTER

“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;"  Philippians 3:10

Paul said, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. What you do not know can injure you. The Bible says, we should be ready to give an answer about the faith that we have.
Most people do not know anything about EASTER. Easter in the Christian sense, is the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Historically speaking, the word Easter is an adulterated word of the name of the goddess that was worshipped in Europe many years ago. It was called the goddess of the early morning sun. That is where the name Easter came from.
What happened was that many of the early Christian converts were worshipping this goddess at that time of the year. When they got converted, they were still drawn to that festive celebration. The church was in a dilemma as to what to do.
Coincidentally, at that same time, the Jews celebrated Passover. Passover is the feast with which the Jews celebrate how God set them free from Egypt.(Jesus is our Passover today).
The church had to look for a way to solve the problem, so what they did was to change the name and called it EASTER, but what they were now celebrating was no longer the goddess but the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is why many times, Easter coincides about same time with the Jews’ celebration of Passover.
Some persons wonder why there is no specific date for Easter. It is because EASTER is fixed by the lunar calendar.it is fixed according to the moon; the last Sunday is usually Easter.
Easter is no pagan worship as believed by some persons. It is the celebration of Jesus Christ, the son of the living God who died and rose on the third day.
PRAYER/CONFESSION:  O Lord, we recognize your death and resurrection. You are no longer in the grave. You died and rose on the third day, therefore, I refuse to be under. I shall rise to the position you have created for me. I refuse sin, depression, oppression, disappointment and failure in the name of Jesus. I will never go back to the world in the name of Jesus.
