“… he walked in the way of the house of Ahab,
and did evil in the sight of the LORD.”
(2 Kings 8:27)
(2 Kings 8:27)
Permit me to show you from the Bible how a certain king Ahaziah became a victim of compromise. According to 2 Kings 8:25, Ahaziah was the grandson of King Jehoshaphat. He began to reign in Judah at the age of 22. In 2 Kings 8:27, we see a very strange account, “And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the house of Ahab: for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab.
Ahaziah was from the house of King David. David was his great grandfather. Jehoshaphat, one of the most godly kings Israel had at that time, was his grandfather but in spite of his godly background, “… he walked in the way of the house of Ahab, and did evil in the sight of the LORD”. How can a man from the house of David, a man after God’s heart, walk in the way of the house of Ahab? It is ironical and baffling. Ahab was the worst king that Israel ever had. Idol worship and compromise characterized his reign. He could best be described as the father of compromise. He married a witch called Jezebel.
The question is: “How did Ahaziah get into such a muddle?”
The Bible says: “…
for he was the son-in-law of the house of Ahab” (2 Kings 8:27b). He
married from the house of a devil and became a devil himself. He did it to
protect himself so that there would be no attacks from that angle.
He compromised his
father’s house for another. What is wrong with that? You may ask. It is
the complete opposite of God’s ways and standards. The sad result of his
actions was that a man from David’s house walked like a man from Ahab’s house.
What does this
mean? It means he began to serve idols and surrounded himself with
witches and wizards. He became a conniver and a crook who took what did
not belong to him.
He began to reign at the age of 22 and he reigned for only one year (2 Kings 8:26). His life and reign ended when he was just 23 years. Was it God’s fault? No, of course! He did it to himself. When you compromise your stand, you are without defense.
Heaven cannot
defend whoever does not understand and speak its language. If you do not
speak for heaven, why should heaven defend you? This should serve
as a wake up call to every Christian. Many Christians who have gone into
politics have compromised. You compromise at home, place of work/business,
market, etc. It ought not to be so.
Moses was an example of a man who did not compromise his faith. The Bible speaking of Moses says: “By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasure of sin for a season.”
Prayer/Confession: I shall not reduce
my standards irrespective of where I find myself in Jesus name. my life will
reflect God’s standards at all times. Amen
