“So all the elders of Israel came to the king to
Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and
they anointed David king over Israel”
2
Samuel 5:3
David was a man who understood the effect of
covenant. Here David was to be anointed King but he would only let the men anoint him until they had first entered into a covenant. He knew that if they
turned against the covenant, there would be repercussion. In the scripture above, the word league means
covenant.
David would not allow the people pour oil on his head until they agreed to go into covenant with him because he knew that same people who are clapping for him then could turn against him thereafter but if they entered a covenant with him, and they do, they would have turned against the covenant and there is always a repercussion.

The men understood what David was doing. If
they had said, they were not going to enter a covenant, David would not have
allowed them pour oil on his head. He would have said, “I cannot be your king
if we cannot go into a covenant. If we are same bone and flesh, we must go into
a covenant”. There have to be an understanding in the spirit. In covenant
relationship, you consider your brother and sister, you handle them with
care, you do not play with it. You try to understand what hurts people. You do
not hurt them because they belong to the same body with you.
In 2 Samuel 5 verse 1, all the tribes of Israel came to
David in Hebron saying, we are the same bone and flesh and David said, “Let’s
enter a covenant”.
In other words, it is not enough to just say,
that is my Christian sister or brother or a fellow believer. It goes more than that. There
is a covenant relationship existing and you must place value on the covenant
that brings us together. It is more than what you say, what do you do to
preserve that covenant relationship. How do you treat other believers?
Don't break the covenant. If the body of Christ can understand that it is a covenant relationship and value it as such, a lot of problems would not be in Christendom today.
Prayer/Confession: I will fulfill my destiny. O Lord, forgive me in any way i have broken the covenant relationship. Help me to live right according to your will in Jesus name, Amen. Every other covenant, agreement, go in the name of Jesus, i address the root of my weakness, go! Every good thing God wrote my name on, it must come to pass. He will not turn against his word.
