#EaglesDevotional - THE MEN THAT WERE WITH DAVID – 4c

“Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone?”                                                              2 Samuel 3:24

Joab was questioning his master.

In the previous chapter, Abner, one of captains of Saul’s army killed Joab’s brother, Asahel. Joab was not around, David a man of peace, the king of Judah at that time settled with Abner. When Joab came back and found out, he marched to king David to question him as seen in the verse above. He told David that Abner deceived him to know their secret but the truth was that he did not tell David the real reason why he was annoyed. The real reason was because of the death of his brother whom Abner had killed. He had his own motive. He left David, went privately, invited Abner back and killed him. In verse 33, David while lamenting said, “o how did Abner die, did he die as a fool...” What David meant was that Abner was a warrior, if Joab wanted to kill him, allow him to use his sword so they fight but this time he didn’t know, he thought everything was alright until Joab stabbed him from his back. That spirit is in a lot of Christians today.

In David’s life, he had a lot of children who troubled him. In psalm 144:7,11; verse 7 says:  "send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children", then In verse 11, David talking to God was crying for deliverance from strange children. "God deliver me from strange children". David was not only referring to children from his body, even Joab was like his child. These were men who were discontented, debtors, depressed in 1 Samuel 30 who came to David. They were nothing and out of nothing, David made something out of them.

In 1 kings 2:5-6, David getting ready to die was talking to Solomon, he said, in other words, Joab's destiny must never be fulfilled, let him not go to his grave in peace, as he troubled me, so trouble him.

In Romans 1:28-end, a covenant breaker is included. You will never fulfill your destiny in life until you pass the test of faithfulness in relationship. When someone trusts you, do not abuse it. When you join a church, you join that church in blood. Anything you do against that church, you do against yourself. Do not play with it.

PRAYER/CONFESSION: Oh Father, deliver me from every evil spirit of Judas, give me grace to maintain integrity in my relationship with You and with man.
