“ And Jesse said unto David
his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten
loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren; And carry these ten cheeses
unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take
their pledge."
1 Samuel 17:17-18
David was anointed in the
presence of brothers and I guess his brothers were not in jubilation.
After Prophet Samuel anointed David as King, his father sent him back to
the wilderness. Even after he had been in the service of the king Saul, in 1
Samuel 17:15, David returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
Some persons in David’s stead
would have objected and said, “can’t
you see I am now a king, how dare you send me to the wilderness to take care of
sheep; was it not in your presence that I was anointed as a king?”
People today are crazy
for recognition. They want to be called, Chief, Doctor, Barrister,
Reverend, etc. Some persons today when they attain certain heights feel
too big to go on errands for the work of God. They suddenly feel they are
bigger than their leaders probably because they have more money, or are more educated,
or they are more talented, etc. It is an error from the pit of hell.
David though a king did not
argue with his father, he went on the errand. Not too long after that in 1
Samuel 17:17-18, his father sent him on another errand, to carry food to his brethren.
Remember he was already king, He was anointed and he knew it for a certainty.
In fact in Psalm 23:5, he said,
“...thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.”
Now imagine a king sent as an
errand boy to take food to his brothers who have probably turned his enemies.
If you are the one, what will you do? Would you complain, and call such an
errand an insult?
It was in carrying food to
the battle field to his brothers that he met Goliath. His destiny began to
unfold. If David had refused, he would have stopped his destiny forever. If he
had not gone, he probably would have been wondering what went wrong on his
death bed, he would have said, I was anointed was meant to be king; what went
wrong? He would not know that it was a simple errand (go and deliver food) that
stopped his destiny.
The thing that stops the
destiny of people many time are small things. If he felt he was too big to go
for the errand, he would have gone to the grave without fulfilling his destiny.
Many go to the grave with their destinies because they do not appreciate little
things. You must be sensitive to the voice of God, to know what
God is telling you to do so that you will not miss your destiny.
Prayer/Confession: O God, open my eyes of understanding, i ask for grace to be
faithful in the little things that you have committed to my hands that i will
fulfil my destiny.
