Lagos rescues 237 abandoned babies

The Lagos State Government says no fewer than 237 abandoned babies were rescued across the state in the last one year.
The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, who stated this at the 2017 Ministerial Briefing of the ministry on Thursday in Alausa, Ikeja, explained that the abandoned babies comprised 106 males and 131 females.
“The figure is higher than the 149 children rescued in 2015,” she added.
The commissioner said the ministry had carried out an audit of the registered orphanages in order to decongest the homes.
She said the state had perfected plans to construct three ultra-modern care centres for old citizens in the state.
“The projects are in line with the government’s determination to provide quality care to the elderly. When completed, the centres will provide an interactive platform, as well as increase socialisation among the aged. The centres will be sited in the three senatorial districts in the state.
“The government is also working to tackle youth restiveness. A total of 16,645 youths have been trained in various vocations, including shoemaking, hairdressing, and photography,” Akinbile-Yussuf said.
She said adequate attention was being paid to issues that affected people living with disabilities and the vulnerable.
She stated that the Lagos State Office for Disability had forwarded proposals to the governor for the procurement of items needed in the agency.
